📖 History & Significance of the Amarnath Yatra
According to legends, Lord Shiva chose the Amarnath Cave to reveal the secret of immortality (Amar Katha) to Goddess Parvati. To maintain secrecy, he left all companions behind—Nandi at Pahalgam, Moon at Chandanwari, Snake at Sheshnag, Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat, and five elements at Panchtarni.
The cave remained hidden until rediscovered by a Muslim shepherd, Buta Malik, in the 19th century. Today, both Hindu priests and Buta Malik’s descendants jointly manage the site.
The ice Shivling naturally forms every year—symbolizing the divine presence of Lord Shiva.
